10 Active Things To Do On Vacation

I just got to Napa Valley, from Vancouver.  I spent 5 days in Vancouver doing tons of active things.  It got me thinking about how to make a vacation more active. One lesson that everyone should know by now is that eating is more important than exercise when it comes to losing weight. Despite the fact that I was more active in these 5 days then anytime this year, I still gained 4 lbs because I allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted to, which included lots of sugar. Never get too cocky to think you can eat whatever you want because you are active, it will always come back to bite you, and it usually does in the butt and stomach areas. :)

Check out this video of a little bit of my hiking, and then I will share with you 10 active things you can do on a vacation.  I would love to hear what you like to do for activities.

1.  Hiking

2.  Biking around a city instead of taking a sight seeing bus.

3.  Canoeing or kayaking

4.  Jogging around a city

5.  Climb the tallest building in the city

6.  Find a park and do a workout on the equipement

7.  Go water skiing or wakeboarding

8.  Surfing or knee board

9.  horseback riding (okay not that strenuous, but tell that to your butt and inner thighs)

10.  Find a class like yoga or specialty class at a gym and do a one session drop in.

I would love to hear what you do on your vacations to stay active.

Bill Phillips Transformation

Bill and I

I just got back from 5 days in Austin, Texas and had the priviledge of meeting one of my heroes in my life Bill Phillips.  When I was in around 9th or 10th grade I ready Body For Life for the first time and was blown away by the knowledge.  It was different than what I had heard before.  It taught that weights, not cardio was the key to fat loss. (So for the thousands of you who do my program and love the fact that we don’t do cardio longer than 60 seconds at a time can thank Bill).  Then during the massive success of his book that sold millions of copies, I noticed BFL support groups popping up all over the place.  This gave me my idea for the Fit Moms For Life community idea.

Bill shared with great passion and vigor his challenge to make our nation, which is dead last in health, to first in health.  With the success of Body For Life, EAS, and many other businesses, Bill would never have to work another day in his life.  But his desire to help people get out of massive amounts of pain in their lives and live their best life, gets him up each and everyday excited!

I got the opportunity to share with Bill my vision for a million mom community that meets in small groups around the country, to not only workout and keep each other accountable for what they eat, but also a community that cares deeply for one another and aids in the improvement of all areas of their life.  Bill said that he would like to have me on his weekly transformation show to share what Fit Moms For Life is doing.  Which is incredibly exciting to me.

So Bill and I are going to talk further about helping each other get our messages out to the world.

Self-Forgiveness Through Fitness

Teresa

This is a guest blog post from one of my Fit Fun Bootcamp instructors Teresa.

If you’re like me, you probably don’t like to make mistakes. You hold yourself to a certain standard, and when you fail to meet that standard, the voice of self-criticism rears its ugly head. The shoulda, woulda, couldas come out in droves. There are a lot of sayings out there about learning from your mistakes, but let’s get real. I think most of us would rather have our lessons come in another shape or form. Mistakes are about as fun to swallow as bitter cherry cough syrup.

Nevertheless, mistakes come with the territory of being a human being. The statistical probability of encountering error increases the longer you live, and the more you live. In other words, if you’re someone who is growing and willing to attempt something potentially challenging like a fitness regimen, a new approach to eating, a new job, parenting, or any meaningful relationship, making a mistake at some point is inevitable.

So the question isn’t how can I be perfect? The question is how can I transform my perception of today and tomorrow’s mistakes? You can berate yourself for having gained 10, 20, or 40 pounds over the past 15 years, or you can ask yourself what those 10, 20, or 40 pounds are trying to say. You can berate yourself for that double-bacon cheeseburger, or for that missed workout, or you can forgive yourself and get back on track. A lot of people let their mistakes and setbacks deter them from their goals. And while self-criticism and anger might motivate you temporarily, it ultimately weighs you down. Long-term motivation and success depends on self-forgiveness.

Here are three things to keep in mind when it comes to self-forgiveness and fitness:

Exchange Mistakes for Meaning Mistakes can break you or make you more self-aware. If you understand what led to a particular mistake or setback in the past, you can develop an alternative game plan for the future. If stress and a lack of sleep have led to missed workouts, what does that mean? What has become a greater priority than your health? Underlying our mistakes there is a message that has applicable meaning to our lives.

Become a Proactive Problem-Solver If your only response to regret is self-criticism, you will only exacerbate any mistake you may have made. After you’ve identified what led to your setback (e.g. stress), commit to action. When it comes to your health and fitness goals, there are so many steps you can take in order to regain your self-assurance. Recommitting to your workout routine, planning your next meal, finding a supportive environment, or reexamining your goals are just a few. Accept that you will make mistakes, but challenge yourself to change. Change is necessary if you want to evolve as a person, and positive change requires a willingness to meet the demands of problem-solving.

Be Your Own Best Friend How would you describe the world’s greatest best friend? You would probably come up with adjectives like kind, compassionate, loyal, and supportive. They would want the best for you, believe in you, and continuously make an effort to be a positive part of your life. Wouldn’t you choose the company of your best friend over the company of your worst critic? When it comes to working out, you have to be your own best friend. Don’t take calls from the voice of self-criticism. Take pride in your efforts and accomplishments! Self-forgiveness is ultimately an act of faith in oneself, and giving oneself another chance to become a healthier human being. So go ahead and let go of that grudge. Forgive yourself. Live a little lighter.

Never Too Late To Start Weight Training

Thank you Kris, one of my newsletter subscribers, for sharing this video with all of us.  The video you are about to watch is very inspiring.  It is a story about a woman in her late forties who went through an emotional divorce and was going through many challenges.  She found weight training and not only has she found it, she has set the audacious goal of being the oldest weight lifter in the Olympics.

I am guessing the chances of her making the Olympics are quite low, but she went from lifting 60 lbs to lifting over 200 lbs.  She has lost over 100 lbs.  So even if she doesn’t make it to the Olympics, look at all she has accomplished.  So many times we fear making goals that are too big because we don’t want to look stupid or not achieve them.  Who cares if you achieve it or not, I can promise you, you will be further along then if you didn’t set the goal in the first place.

Enjoy the video.

If you were inspired by this story, I encourage you to create a crazy goal that many around you might laugh at.  Then write your goal in the comment section below.  I promise not to laugh and am committed to helping you reach that goal.

I love her story also from the stand point of how she has lost about 100 lbs by weight training.  I don’t know for sure but I am guessing she doesn’t do a lot of cardio.  It shows the power of building muscle to speed up metabolism.  If you want to take that next step and fall in love with weight training, I am definitely your trainer.  :)  Whether you live in the Madison, WI area and can come to my Fit Fun Bootcamps, or if you don’t live in the area or would prefer to workout with DVDs from the comfort of your home, I have lots of programs for you.  To the left of this blog post there are images of DVDs, click on any of them to learn more.  Everyone of my programs is based mostly on weight training.

Besides sharing your crazy goal in the section below, feel free to ask any questions

5 “Weird” Fat Burning Exercises

I thought I would go back into my vault of close to 400 youtube videos and share with you a few of my favorite fat burning exercises.  These videos were taken in Chicago with my friend and fellow trainer John Hall.  At around 45 years old, he is a great example to me what a body can look and perform like twenty years from now.  He practices what he preaches, and I enjoy working out with him.  I hope you enjoy these videos and learn some stuff and be entertained.

1.  Walrus:  This is great for core, back, and triceps.  It is also great to have your kids do if you want your floors to be cleaned.  :)

2. Killer leg hops:  This shows that I neglect my legs a little too much.  But you don’t have to have rings to do this one, just jump in and out or for your kids draw circles in chalk on your driveway.

3.  Alligator Crawls:  These are pretty hard and advanced, but to make it easier don’t bend your arms as much.  Whenever I go to schools to teach bootcamps to kids I always have them do this exercise and they have a blast doing it.

4.  Hamstring Falls:  This is one of my favorite exercises I have my personal training clients do.  I haven’t found another exercise that gets the hamstrings as well as this one does!  Fit Fun Bootcampers, don’t be surprised to be seeing this one soon!

5.  Burpees with weighted med ball throw:  This one gets the heart rate up like very few other exercises.  I realize this isn’t very practical if you are trying to do this at home.  A ball like the one I was using probably costs $60 and most don’t have a wall that is tough enough to throw against.  But you could do this with a partner and do a chest pass to them, or use a basketball.

If you have enjoyed these exercises that you can do at home with little or no equipment, I encourage you to check out my partner workout DVDs called Ultimate Buddy Bootcamp, or my Buns Guns Back and Shoulders DVDs.

Great Summer Recipe and Interesting Information on Weight Loss

Hi Everyone!

My name is Karen, I am a not so regular contributor on this blog (I will blame it on my 3 young girls :) ) and a Fit Fun Bootcamp Instructor in Waunakee, Wis.

Beat the Heat
If you live in the Midwest this week is going to be HOT. I am trying not to complain, one it isn’t good for you but two I really dislike winter and cold weather. Just be smart in the heat. If you are exercising outdoors, please get your workouts in early and hydrate. Otherwise, unless you are swimming, I would recommend working out in an air conditioned building.

Are you trying to lose weight and the scale isn’t moving? If yes, check out this article.
I am not going to promote or sell any supplements. I was emailed this article and found it very interesting so I wanted to pass it along. Keep in mind it takes good nutrition and exercise to lose weight safely and keep it off. I take Krill Oil and wanted to share this article with you as I found it very interesting.

Recipe – Thanks to Beth, a regular Fit Fun Bootcamper in Middleton and Waunakee, for this recipe for a great snack or dessert for summer.

Banana Fruit Split
Ingredients:

2 large bananas
8 “scoops” watermelon and/or cantaloupe
1 cup blueberries (or raspberries or strawberries)
1/2 cup low fat vanilla yogurt
1/4 cup granola

1. Peel bananas and cut in half crosswise, then cut each piece in half lengthwise. For each serving, lay 2 banana pieces against the sides of a shallow dish.

2. To make watermelon “scoops” use an ice cream scoop to create balls of watermelon. Remove seeds, if needed. Place a watermelon “scoop” at each end of the dish.

3. Fill the center space with berries.

4. Stir yogurt until smooth, spoon over the watermelon “scoops”.

5. Sprinkle with granola.

Have a great week and don’t forget to be mindful of how your body feels under these extreme heat conditions.

Go Out, Get Active!

Posted by Roger,  a contributor to this blog.

In case you haven’t had a chance to experience one of Dustin’s bootcamps in person, just wanted to share this video to show you what it’s like. My wife had a stress fracture and can’t participate right now but she did me a favor and got up at 4:30 am to take the pics and video. Hope you enjoy.
