Random Thoughts

Got up nice and early this morning to attend Memorial Day Boot Camp. It was kind of a humid morning but there was a little breeze so all was good. Afterwards I had a chance to reflect a bit since no work today. Nothing particularly profound but thought I ‘d share them with you anyways!

It was after a workout like today that I realize why I like group exercise so much. My partner at boot camp today was Darcy and she was awesome.  We had to do chariots which are very challenging. She was so encouraging to me, keeping me aware of how much distance I had to go, reminding me of things like pumping my arms that might help, and keeping such a positive attitude. She also shared how challenging this exercise was for her as well which always makes me feel better. There is also such a community built within the group. It’s interesting to talk with other people about their goals and their reasons for working out. It’s also nice to have people genuinely seem to care about you and give you shout outs when they notice you are getting stronger, or faster, or leaner.

Got a new short term goal. In early July I’m getting together with several of my friends from high school. A couple are coming from Colorado, another from Iowa, I’m traveling from Wisconsin and we’ll meet with a couple more from Michigan in the city where we all grew up. We are all turning 50 this year and I’m determined not be the weak link in this group. So have a little extra incentive to push myself.

Finally, we’re going through a rough period here in Wisconsin and throughout our country, no matter which way you lean. I know that my wife and I have become more active politically than either of us has ever been. Unfortunately that hasn’t always worked out the best for our health and well-being. I read a blog about activism and mental health that really just reminds you to take time for yourself. Luckily I have boot camp and this wonderful community of people to take me away for awhile. And as challenging as my workouts are, I find that right now these are pretty much the happiest 45 minutes of my day. My poor wife, though, has a stress fracture in her foot and can’t participate in class right now. She is still doing some upper body work at our health club but I know she misses the camaraderie of the group.  She is also a big proponent of group exercise.

So as this long day ends (I’ve been up since 4:30 am and it is now 11:40 pm) I’ll head off to bed ready to face another day of challenges and I’m sure plenty of random thoughts.

Have a good one.
