My Ah-ha Moment

This post is by Melissa K.

So I’ve been dealing with back pain for quite some time now. ¬†I’ve tried many different things to find relief, but nothing helped for long. ¬†Every time I heard a story about a treatment that worked for someone else I would run out and try it. ¬†I felt discouraged many times. ¬†All these other people found their ah-ha moments, where was mine?

Well, there was one thing I kept hesitating to try. ¬†Acupuncture. ¬†There are a few reasons why I didn’t try it: ¬†It’s a treatment typically not covered by insurance, my husband puts acupuncturist in the same category as snake oil salesmen, and if all the doctors I’ve seen can’t figure it out what good are some tiny needles going to do anyway?

Well, tonight I finally tried it. ¬†Here’s how it went:

Needles don’t really bother me but I still felt a little nervous when I arrived at my appointment. ¬†The practitioner was very friendly and walked me through the whole process. ¬†We went over my medical history; what makes the pain worse, what makes it better, how does it feel; that sort of thing. ¬†Then I took my socks off and laid face down on a toasty warm massage table. ¬†She cleaned the spots where the needles would go with alcohol then started to put the needles in.

She talked me through everything she was doing and what I might expect to feel. ¬†Some needles I hardly felt at all and some felt like a little bee sting followed by a kind of aching feeling. ¬†Once all the needles were in she left¬†me to rest for about 10 minutes then checked on me and stimulated the needles again by gently twisting them. ¬†After another 15 minutes of rest she came¬†back and took all the needles out. ¬†When I sat up my back pain was gone! ¬†I’ve never felt immediate relief from any other treatment before! ¬†How could I come in with a pain level of 5 out of 10 and leave at a 0? ¬†I was in disbelief! ¬†This was the Ah-ha moment I had been waiting for!

What got me to finally try it?  Groupon.  Well, that and two physical therapists gave up on me in one day leaving me with no more ideas.  I am so glad I finally tried Acupuncture for my back pain and I hope my future appointments go as well as the first one did!

What ah-ha moments have you experienced?
