A Healthier and Happier You!

Hi this is Liz, one of Dustin’s new contributors.  I figure my first post should be about how I got to where I am in my fitness and nutritional life.  In high school I was very active and ran on the track and cross country teams.  I was by no means very good, I think I participated more for the camaraderie than because I was passionate about it.

I loved hiking and being active outside on the weekends with friends.  The fall of my senior year I had a pretty bad leg injury that had me on crutches and in one of those silly boots for a couple of months.  That injury was very pivotal in my life!  For the next 12 years I did not exercise more than a couple of times a year.

I gained weight through college, after college, and once I had kids I put on more weight.  After I had my second son and he stopped nursing, the weight just kept piling on until I got on the scale one day and weighed 203.  I knew once I went over 200 I was in trouble and needed to be a better role model for my kids. Plus how was I going to keep up with two boys under the age of 3 if I didn’t get my act together?!  I had no idea I had gotten so big, I always deleted photos of myself thinking “oh, that’s a bad angle!” (I had to ask family for pictures for this article).

A few days after the scale read 203, a neighbor asked if I would like to go for a walk, that was the beginning of the new me, a me that is healthier and happier than I have ever been. We slowly started out walking, then added some 1 minute runs into our walks until we got to a point where we could run for 20 minutes straight. Next thing I knew I was a runner again, but one with a desire to do the best that I could.

After a friend told me about Dustin’s MamaTone class, I knew it was just what I needed to keep me going!  The friends and support that have come from being a BEFORE part of MamaTone has really kept me on track.

There have been countless runs and races where the thoughts of “would Dustin be proud of me?” have come across my brain.  Those thoughts always make me move a little faster and work a little harder.  I’ve lost lots of weight and inches over the past year working with Dustin and the strength I have have gained is incredible!

While training for my first marathon this fall I discovered that I was gluten intolerant.  This has completely changed the way I eat and now even more weight is coming off.  I look forward to writing AFTER         future posts about my physical and mental strengths that have gotten me here and can hopefully help you be healthier and happier too!  Also, I will be writing lots about the adventure of being gluten free and losing my last 20 pounds.

  6. Thanks everyone! As of today I’m officially down 45 pounds. I’m telling you this so we can all hold each other accountable on Thanksgiving. Don’t let one day of eating get in the way of your goals!!!! Remember just like Dustin said it’s about being with family, not overeating!
