I know there are people from all over the world who read this, but for those of us in the Midwest United States, it has finally gotten warm—with highs getting into the 80′s! With summer nearing, getting workouts in outside is very desirable. After a long winter, the fresh air and bright sun are all we need to lift our spirits and brighten our day.
Fit Fun Bootcamps always get very popular in the summer because people just don’t want to be inside any longer. Today I want to share with you some great exercises you can do outside with a medicine ball. Medicine balls are one of the most popular tools I use to train my clients because they are very simple, inexpensive ($20-$50 depending on weight), and easy to transport.
Mary has lost a couple of jean sizes and, at the age of 40, is in the best shape of her life. I am very proud of everything she has done and the extreme intensity she brings to each workout. She definitely deserves the results.
Please note that this video was filmed a couple of weeks ago. We have bootcamp every Saturday at 8 AM at Elver Park, which is free for current bootcampers and a $10 drop in for everyone else. We will be doing another big kickoff in a couple of weeks because the weather was very bad the first time around.
Here is the list of exercises we did with the medicine balls.
-2 ball squats
-2 ball squat jumps
-2 ball high knee running
-Sit-up ball toss
-Med ball slamdowns

I want to introduce you to a special bootcamper of mine, her name is Angie, and she doesn’t let anything stop her from achieving her goals. I get tired of hearing complaints about why people don’t want to start working out, or eating right, i gets pretty old. Angie has a pretty legitimate reason why bootcamp isn’t right for her; she only has one arm! But that isn’t stopping her from doing pushups, pull ups, rows, and pretty much anything else I can throw at her.
Check out this video she made of her at my Fit Fun Bootcamp. Who cares if you have 100 lbs to lose. At least you probably have two legs that work and two arms… What is your excuse?
This also reminds me of another story of a 4 year old boy named Ezra. ABC News won’t let me embed this into my website, but here is the link to it. I got goosebumps from it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZrpO0rkzvHM
Question: What EXCUSE are you going to get rid of, and what TRUTH are you going to now embrace?
Sometimes I work with people who are literally in life or death situations; they are ticking time bombs waiting to go off. 1 year ago, I met Trish, a morbidly obese woman with a willingness and excitement about learning and working hard. She has absorbed everything I have taught her by participating in my grocery tours, bootcamps, and everything else I have offered. It has been pure joy to watch Trish transform as a person.
Learn more about Trish’s story and her sister in this post I did awhile back.
Trish is an amazing woman who came to bootcamp with a major motivator— her sister was extremely sick with late stage breast cancer. Trish began researching the role diet plays in disease, particularly in cancer. Many days Trish does “doublers” (two bootcamps back to back with no rest) and always keeps the group laughing with her outgoing personality.
Trish has lost 68 lbs. and 8 inches off her waist. More importantly than the numbers is how incredibly fit she is now. She came to bootcamp barely doing pushups on her knees and now she can even do 1-arm pushups. What a difference a year can make!
Many people think my programs are just for fit people or for those who are trying to lose the last 10 lbs. In reality, my programs are for anyone ready to make change happen, to break out of their rut, or to blaze new trails that they didn’t even know existed.
Thanks Trish for being a great role model for your kids and everyone reading this article.
If you live in the Madison area I would love to see you at one of my Fit Fun Bootcamps. Come try it out for a week and see if you don’t deliver huge value to you. If you aren’t in the area, I have bottled up my training and workouts and put them in DVD format through my Got Core DVDs, and Fit Moms For Life DVDs. They have helped over 2000 people in the past 10 months.

This past weekend Fit Fun Bootcamps kicked off the indoor season in a big way with 97 adults and 25 kids participating in the workout. It was great to see so many people and families coming together to invest in themselves, get a great workout in, and have lots of FUN in the process!
I wanted to thank 8 of my trainers for being there to help out with it! Thank you: Ryan, Marsue, Deb, Abby, Kelli, Allie, Shane, and Matt!
Hopefully Youtube won’t take the audio off this video. I chose Michael Jackson’s Man in The Mirror song. The song doesn’t have the greatest beat for a workout video, but it shares a very powerful message… We can’t change anyone else without changing ourselves first. The 97 bootcampers who came, were creating that change from within!

I didn’t think I could see any bigger results than I have seen so far in my Fit Fun Bootcamps, but I was wrong! It just goes to show what anyone is capable of IF they apply the techniques I teach and go after then 100%. You might not lose close to 5 lbs a week, but you will greatly improve. Todd had the right ingredients in him to make this change: he was ready, he was mentally prepared, he had a plan, he was motivated, and he had the right attitude. Keep in mind, Todd started this around Christmas time when everyone says they can’t lose weight.
So here is Todd’s amazing story in his own words!
“As ‘before and after pictures’ tell part of a story, these are BEFORE and WORK IN PROGRESS pictures. And here is more to the story.

Todd at 215
I have been running for the last 6 years on a regular basis. EXACTLY 3.8 miles 3 to 4 times a week (The same route every day) my legs were getting fatigued and the weight just going up.
In late November I heard Dustin Maher on Wisconsin Public Radio and was impressed with how he was able to answer caller’s questions. It wasn’t until Friday Dec 12th that I decided I had to get the help of and outside party. I signed up for FIT FUN BOOTCAMP to start on Monday. This would be the FIRST time I have ever joined a workout group much less going to a health club. When I told my family and friends what I was about to do, I just got Blank stares. The story I am about to share with you is an all too common story. It is a client who came to me because she was frustrated that her body was holding on to so much fat, despite the fact that she was doing endless amounts of cardio and trying to eat healthy. After sitting down with her and analyzing her exercise and eating habits, it became clear that she was eating away her muscle with her endless cardio and very low calorie diets. My recommendations to her was to consume much more lean protein and stop all long distance cardio and instead weight train 3X per week for 45 minutes, do 20 minutes of high intensity cardio 2X per week, and eat more lean protein and supplement with protein drinks.
She took my advice and in the past year has completely transformed her body. One of the things that set her apart, was her work ethic and intensity in the gym. She wasn’t afraid to work hard, sweat, and even let out some soft grunts. At one point she told me to make her puke, so I did… TWICE! When she started to workout she wasn’t able to even do one pushup! How things can change in only a year!
Here is her story in her own words!

Abby Before
“Everyone has heard of the “Freshman 15;” well, I apparently decided to take it a step further and experienced something closer to the “Freshmen 20!” But I didn’t stop there, over the next few years, I continued to gain more weight. Even after college, the weight continued to pile on, reaching an all-time high for me of 149lbs. During this time, I was quite the “Cardio Queen.” I would spend from 1.5 to 2 hours/day, 3-4 days/week doing any variety of cardio (treadmill, bike, elliptical, stair climber). This wasn’t exactly high-intensity cardio, either (obviously, I would not be able to keep that up for 1.5-2 hours!). Despite my numerous hours at the gym, engaged in my Cardio Queen activities, I couldn’t lose any weight…and more specifically, couldn’t lose any fat!
After years of frustration and low self-esteem, I signed up for Dustin’s Core Class. I always thought I had a strong core, after all I could do countless crunches! Boy, was I wrong! Dustin’s class taught me how weak I really was…core and all. After a month of Core Class, I noticed my body was getting stronger, but I wanted to kick it up a notch. I signed up for small group personal training. Before my first session with Dustin, he took my body fat, which surprised me at 25%. I was shocked at how high it was, and I couldn’t help but wonder what it was before I started Core Class! More on Amazing Fat Loss Transformation: Cardio Queen Sees Light of Day!

Jody at 171 lbs
Today I wanted to highlight a mom who has made an amazing transformation. I met jody less than a year ago, she was very bubbly and had tons of energy, but she was very frustrated with how her body looked after giving birth to 5 kids. She would always tell me, “Dustin, you need to get rid of this.” (She would point to her stomach and butt area)
She was like nearly every mom I meet, who gave, gave, and gave to her kids, but forgot, or chose not to take care of herself. She started coming to MamaTone and doing what it took to get there despite taking care of her small kids. Jody worked out extremely hard during last spring and started to see some good progress, but then summer came and she continued to workout well, but developed the attitude, “I am working out hard so it doesn’t matter what I eat.” This is a common mistake that many people make when trying to lose weight, they believe that exercise will burn so huge amount of calories and eating doesn’t matter. WRONG! Jody got stronger and fitter during the summer, but they weight didn’t come off nearly as fast. I then told her she needs to take it to the next level and get serious about her eating. She took the advice and began making separate meals for herself and preparing meals in advance. When she did this it was amazing how fast the weight came off. Literally every week I saw her she looked smaller.
So here is her story in her own words!
“When I went into deliver my 5th child I weighed 180lbs (I’m

Jody at 124!
5’3″). I know I know, I had a baby in my body, but it was the most I had ever weighed…even more than when I was pregnant with my twins! For whatever reason, and I’m sure I could come up with a ton of them, the weight was NOT coming off. By the time my baby was about 11 months old, and I weighed close to 170, I was frustrated and tired of not fitting back into my prebaby clothes (or any clothes in my closet for that matter). I accidentally ran across Dustin on Craigslist and his MamaTone class sounded intriguing. I met with him before signing up, took the complimentary class, and I was hooked! It wasn’t doing the same thing over and over again, but the perfect mix of cardio and weights (something I had never done before). The challenge was not only refreshing but most importantly, rewarding! Within a short period of time, my husband and I were noticing a difference, and my shame and embarrassment was melting away, literally! Dustin has always been extremely professional, comfortable, and encouraging. He’s the only person who has ever taken the time to show me how to do the exercises correctly, check up on me, push me, and get me to where I want to be. After 4 months of MamaTone classes, I lost 30 pounds and met my goal weight for October. Since then, I’ve lost another 10+ pounds while taking his Bootcamp classes. Marsue close to 200 lbs
I love my job! Seeing people realize goals that they only dreamed about is very fulfilling and uplifting for me. Improving ones self-confidence, self-image, and self-esteem is something that is hard to put a price tag on. I met

Marsue 9 months later at 117
Marsue awhile back at my grocery shopping tour. She was kind and quiet, little did I know that she had had a fire lit under her for the past few months. She was on a life transformation and I was fortunate to cross paths with her. She joined Fit Fun Bootcamp www.madisonbootcamps.com and continued her amazing journey. Each session I give her the heaviest weights, and the most progressed form of each exercise and Marsue quietly accepts each challenge I have given her. It has been amazing to see the physical transformation that has occurred in Marsue, some of her friends and previous acquaintences hardly recognize her now. The physical transformation is great, but I am sure if you would ask Marsue, the internal transformation is even more powerful! So here is Marsue’s story in her own words. “A little less than a year ago I was 185 pounds, had no energy, had daily backaches and after getting home from work spent many evenings in front of the television. I was miserable and had finally got it through my head that I needed to make a change. I started taking MMA classes at Karate America along with my husband and daughter. It wasn’t easy, but with a combination of setting a goal: ‘Lose weight and eat healthier’, exercise: ‘karate 4 days a week’, eating correctly ‘portion control and cutting out junk food’ and a good support system: ‘my husband and karate instructor’, I was able to loose 40 lbs in about 5 months. At that point I was feeling much better but wanted to take it to the next level. I was introduced to Dustin at a ‘Grocery Store Tour’ that was set up through karate. I started getting his emails, reading his blogs and when the Fit Fun Bootcamps started up in McFarland, found that I was hauling myself out of bed at 5:00 in the morning to work out and actually looking forward to it. It has been 17 weeks since I started the bootcamps. I have lost another 20+ pounds, lost 2 1/2 inches from my waist, have significantly increased my upper body strength, have tons of energy, no backaches and actually like myself again. Bootcamps have allowed me to make new friends and build a great support group while at the same time giving me individual attention , support and motivation . They work you hard, but it is well worth it. At 44, I am in better shape than I have been in since playing collegiate volleyball. I can’t wait to get to my next workout.”
