How Oprah is Going to Lose the Weight

Yesterday’s Oprah was simply amazing!  One of the best Oprah shows I have seen, so good, I watched it twice.  Oprah is kicking off a 5 day “Best Life” theme, were she has experts in various health topics.  Yesterday’s show was with Bob Green, her trainer, and a very intimate look into Oprah’s life.  She was very honest with herself and with her viewers about her frustrations with “letting herself go” and not “living life” instead only existing.  For Oprah, 2009 is the year she makes time for herself and “loves herself.”  I love her message and is the message that I preach to moms everyday.  You must make time for yourself and take care of yourself.  So many moms are like Oprah, always giving of themselves, they have a servant’s heart.  But, even a servant’s heart, if not properly taken care of will become worn out and fatigued, and they lose their zest for life.

Are you worn out?  Have put everyone elses needs before your own?  Have you given yourself “Mom time” of late? If not, I challenge you to make that time for yourself.  Take time to exercise, to eat right, to get enough sleep, to get pampered, to spend time with your girlfriends talking about things other than kids, take time alone with your husband.  When you take time for yourself, you will become a happier healthier you!

So how is Oprah going to go from over 200 lbs to a much lighter weight (she doesn’t have a goal weight, but rather wants to be strong and healthy)?  Oprah is FINALLY going to do what I have been pleading moms to do for the past 7 years!  She is going to do much less slow cardio and more weights!!!!  I just about jumped off the couch when she said “I am going to focus more on resistance training this year!”  Ahh finally, I hope that one sentences will cause millions of moms to overcome their hesitation to weight train.

Oprah’s weight loss plan is to lift 6 days a week, splitting her body up into groups.  Chest/tris one day, back/biceps/shoulders another day, and legs another day.  She will rotate between these three splits.  On top of that, she will do 30 min of aerobics everyday.  She demonstrated that cardio should be intense enough that it is possible to carry a conversation on, but very unpleasent and hard to do.  This is generally consistent with an intensity level of 70% of a persons max heart rate.

Oprah’s weight loss diet is very simple… she says the key is planning out every meal and knowing what you are going to eat for the week.  She has every meal and snack written out on a chart, and then eats the same menu each week.  Her diet consists of lean proteins, lots of veggies, some complex carbs, and some healthy fats.  hmm have you heard that before from somewhere :)

What I think about the plan:

Overall I am extremely pleased with Oprah’s weight loss plan and am sure that if she follows it she will be in amazing shape!  There are a few things Continue Reading →

Secret Rapid Fat Loss Workout of one of America’s Most Fit Moms

[youtube coQRqjp8iZo]

I have had the privilege of small group personal training Gina and her family for close to two years now.  Gina has created one of the fittest bodies that I have encountered when training hundreds of moms.  She is my only female client to have bench pressed her own weight (she benched 130 lbs) Not only does Gina take care of her 4 kids, but also has a high stress job taking care of $100′s of millions in inventory.  Gina has learned to balance, work, friends, family, and health very well!

What I believe sets Gina apart from 99% of men and women out there fitness wise, is her mental toughness.  Sometimes I will try to ”break” her, meaning I will make her do an incredible amount of work without resting, I have NEVER heard her complain or moan about something being too tough.  I think her most common used phrase is “What’s Next?” Gina’s willingness to face a challenge head on has shaped her body and her life dramatically.

In this next video I sit down with Gina as she Continue Reading →

What Gets Me Steaming Mad!

I am a VERY laid back guy and my emotions don’t get very high or very low… it takes a lot to get me mad.  But there has been one thing in the past couple years that has consistently gotten me irrate, I almost threw the remote one time at the TV while watching them.  You know what I am talking about, those infomercial gadgets promising the world; in particular all of the abdominal machines out there that promise a lean sleek stomach for women and a ripped 6 pack on guys.

The thing that frustrates me more than anything is that they are selling millions and millions of dollars worth of this crap.  People are so desperate to lose weight and look great naked that they become vulnerable to smooth advertising.  These same people who are willing to spend $100-$200 on a cheap piece of metal are the same ones who won’t spend money to receive correct knowledge from a fitness professional.

Being a fitness professional and fitness model allows me to know the truth behind these infomercials and products.  I understand how the body responds to exercise and nutrition.  I also understand and have been part of the business side of fitness modeling and hiring for these types of shows.  A few of my friends and acquaintances are on these infomercials and magazine covers.  I can promise you that they didn’t get the great body and 6 pack with the product that they are advertising.  They did it with years of hard work, careful eating and a few weeks of mini-starvation and dehydration before the shoot.  If you didn’t see my last post check out the secret preparation of a fitness model http://www.dustinmaherfitness.com/index.php/2008/12/08/secret-pre-contest-diet-of-a-fitness-model/

I talk a lot about abs in my posts.  I have been obsessed with “core training” and achieving a six pack since the age of about 15.  I have studied abs for thousands of hours and could show you at least 200 core exercises, but now I know that achieving a great stomach has very little to do with ab exercises and more to do about nutrition and total body weight training.

I am not saying core training isn’t important… it is very important (I plan on releasing a core DVD at some point), have made a good career just helping people get a strong core and Continue Reading →

Workout for Baby and Mom

There are very few times in a mom’s day that allows for her to exercise (or do anything else for herself for that matter) This is especially the case when the kids are very young.  Sometimes it is just best to multitask (I know you as a mom are already good at that!) and exercise WITH the baby.  I am not talking gentle yoga though, I am talking exercises that will burn fat and tone muscle.  Here is a clip of three exercises that you can do with your baby to tone up those muscles!

Female Fat Loss: Why you shouldn’t do crunches

As a new mom wanting to get a flat stomach, I see women doing endless crunches… This is the worst thing possible for them.  I worked with a mother who did just that and had a 4 finger separation in her abdomen because the outer abdominal muscles (rectus abdominus) were pulled too far apart from pregnancy and never given a chance to be pulled in.  In this video Jill and I will demonstrate an amazing exercise that can help pull that stomach back in!
