5 Ways To Help Oprah Overcome Obesity

Oprah has made it official.  She is back over 200 lbs.  I watch the show frequently (yes I am proud of this) and it is pretty apparent that her weight has once again sky rocketed since her 2006 weight of 160.  At her current weight her BMI (body mass index) is 31.5 which put her in the obese category and at a much higher risk for heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol and diabetes.

She writes in her new January Continue Reading →

Secret Pre-Contest Diet of a Fitness Model

[youtube NoLCDmDzCk8]

Many people asked how I did at Fitness America www.fitnessamerica.com.  If you didn’t hear already, I lost 27 lbs in 6.5 weeks.  Keep in mind about 15 of those lbs was water.  I placed 25 out of 52 (which was better than last year), I also placed 19th in swimwear, which I was please about!

A lot of fitness models and bodybuilders keep it a secret to how they prepare nutritionally for a show, but I enjoy sharing how I prepared.  Keep in mind, I don’t necessarily recommend many of these strategies for the average person, but I think there are two important take home messages you should take from this video.

1.  Prepare in advance:  A fitness model knows EXACTLY what they are going to eat for many days in advance.  They make a menu, and measure and cook the food, and then find a way to transport the food.  Being prepared is so important for you as a mom.  You need to know what you have to cook for the day, what you need to buy at the store, and if you are eating the same meals as your kids.

2.  Know your body.  I would say that about 80% of nutritional information and guidelines apply to everyone, but that last 20% is where you need to learn how your body responds.  Some people might respond pourly to certain carbs, dairy, or fats.  It is your job to make careful observations as to your exercise and nutrtional habits and how they affect how you look and feel.  This doesn’t happen overnight, but be trying new things out and observe.  It is great once you know how your body responds, because you feel like you are in total control over everthing.

Have you nominated that deserving mom yet to receive $500, you have two more weeks to do so.  Visit http://www.dustinmaherfitness.com/index.php/2008/12/01/nominate-deserving-mom-to-win-500/ for more details!

4 Things To Do To Live 14 Years Longer!

I always find it interesting how so many people are working so hard to become wealthy at the cost of their health.  I am not talking about a single mom who is working hard to make ends meet, but just the overall lifestyle we are creating for ourselves.  We are hoping to make a lot of money so that one day we have the time to spend that money in our later years.
What if I told you I can extend your life an average of 14 years by following just a few simple steps.  Would you be interested?
A recent study showed that, on average, a person who does all 4 of the following recommendations will do just that, live an additional 14 years!
-Eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables
-Drink moderately (no more than 1 drink a day if you are a woman; 2 drinks a day if you are a man)
-Don’t smoke
-Get involved in physical activity for 30 minutes each day
Pretty simple huh?
Do you qualify for these additional 14 years?  If not, do something about it.
-Buy more fruits and vegetables and carry them around throughout the day.
-Stop binge drinking and if serious enough join AA.  Find friends who don’t drink and participate in healthier activities.
-Find a smoking cessation program out there that will give you the tools necessary to rid your addiction of cigarettes.
-Join a local gym, outdoors group, or get together daily with some friends to workout together.  If you are in the Madison area I would love to see you at one of my many programs: Fit Fun Bootcamps, MamaTone Fitness, Got Core, and Small Group Personal Training.  For info on all of these visit www.dustinmaherfitness.com

What Are You Thankful For?

As Thanksgiving approaches, it is a great time to reflect back on the past 6 months to a year and reflect on all the great things that have happened to us.  You might be someone going through tough times right now, but even those who are going through tough times have things to be thankful for.

I have been called by some, a forever optimist and been asked if I ever get sad.  The answer is yes I do, but I try not to stay in that place of sadness.  Just remember, there is someone else out there in the world that has it worse than you, and life has its seasons, and everyone will experience some winters, but spring and summer is just around the corner!

I am asking you to do me a favor and reply to this post and give me 5 things that you are thankful for.  This will not only help you realize all the great things that you have, but will also be an encouragement to everyone who reads the blog.

I will lead by example and give you 5 things I am thankful for!

#1  I am thankful that I have a career that I am so deeply passionate about, in which I get up each morning at 5 AM excited for the day, knowing that I just might be that one bright spot in a person’s day, or knowing that I have had an impact in a person’s life by helping them get in great shape.  I am thankful for the times I lay in bed thinking of the next program or idea that I can create to help more and more people get in shape.

#2  I am thankful for a family and parents that speak the truth and isn’t afraid of offending me.  (my mom has told me when she doesn’t think a blog post of mine is appropriate :) )  I am also thankful that they support me in my endevours and support me as I take the path less traveled.

#3  I am thankful for a body that can take me where I want to go and allow me to experience all that this great world has to offer.  I am thankful for the enormous amount of knowledge I have been able to learn about the body the past 8 years and how I am able to apply it to myself.

#4  I am thankful for my spirituality that gives me a deeper and more lasting perspective on life on earth.

#5  I am thankful for everyone of my clients that I get to see each week.  They motivate me, inspire me, and keep me pumped up and encouraged!  I look forward to so much more with everyone!

It was hard just to narrow it down to 5, but now it is your turn!  Reply to this message and share what you are thankful for!

Keep moving,

Dustin Maher

The Secrets of goal setting

Dear Friends,
If you watched my grocery shopping video, I had mentioned I bought frozen rhubarb for my protein shakes to try it out.  I HIGHLY unrecommend rhubarb in your smoothies… not only is it very stringy and gets stuck in your blender blade, but it also doesn’t taste too good.

This past Sunday at 4:30 PM was a somewhat exciting milestone for myself and fitness.  For the first time in my life I was able to bench press the 100 lb dumbells.  What got me even more excited was that I did this while dieting and having lost 12 lbs.  Dieting will usually cause muscle loss as well.

I don’t usually share personal specific #’s and such with you, but I did for a couple reasons.

This has been a goal that I have been wanting to achieve for over 4 years, but about a year ago really set my mind to achieving it.  I started to tell others about it, I set a deadline, and I even competed against my little brother with it(he beat me :( ).  My goal was to be able to do it before my surgery this past June, unfortunately I wasn’t quite able to do it, but I didn’t give up on the goal and the dream.

So what goals do you have in your life that you aren’t achieving?  Have you ever told anybody about them?  Have you set goals and failed at achieving them and no longer set goals for yourself?

Goals are so important, because without goals you don’t know where you want to go, and if you don’t know where you want to go, you won’t know how to get there.  Goals are the rudder that stears the ship of your life. (wow that sounds like a Dr Phil comment)

So often people don’t make goals for themselves and then wonder why they never achieve what they want.

When you achieve a goal in your life share it with someone, sharing it will give you satisfaction and make you want to create new goals to achieve.  That is why I share my triumph with you today.

So….

1.  Make specific goals with deadlines.
2.  Tell people around you what those goals are to keep you accountable
3.  If you don’t reach your goal, set new goals and observe why you didn’t achieve those first goals.
4.  Celebrate once you achieve your goal (ideally not food related)

Well this is getting long, but just wanted to get that off my chest!

Keep moving,
Dustin

Fat Loss Tips: 80/20 Rule for Fitness

Dear Friends,
I want to first welcome the 120 of you who heard my fitness show yesterday and signed up for my newsletter.  I am proud of you for taking that step.  If you have questions that you would like me to cover in an upcoming newsletter please let me know!  If you missed yesterdays radio show listen to it at Ask the expert call-in show
If you missed my NBC news segment this morning where I talked about eliminating lower back pain you can watch it at

[youtube RxkYkd3TaBQ]

You may have heard of the 80/20 rule which is applied in nearly every aspect of life.  For example 20% of the population holds 80% of the wealth.  This can also be applied to health.  Doing 80% of the right things will allow you to achieve a great looking and feeling body.
So many times we are looking for those “secrets” that make up the 20% which we think will give us the results.  There are many tips that I share that many people don’t know about, but they would fall in the 20%, but without living a healthy lifestyle these “secrets” won’t do much.
I recently was on google looking for common phrases people were searching for related to fitness.  One of the most common phrases was “diet pill.”  When I saw this it got my blood boiling and just reminded me again how lazy people are, looking for the miracle pill.
So what is the 80% I am talking about?  I am talking about 4 pillars that I believe will allow you to reach all your goals.
1. Nutrition
2. Exercise
3. Social Support
4. Right Mental Attitude
I get emails from people wanting to know which weight loss supplement they should take (I think most supplements don’t work, and if they do, only when combine with the above formula) Very seldom will I recommend a supplement to someone who has poor eating habits and inconsistent exercise.  If someone is doing many of the right things, some supplements will definitely help some.
So lets stop trying to dissect quite so much the minute details of training and instead focus on the big picture.
1.  Don’t eat crap
2.  Get involved in high intensity exercise (sweat a lot)
3.  Surround you with positive supportive people
4.  Realize healthy is a life long process and ever evolving, don’t see it as a short term commitment.
Once you get those 4 pillars understood and start practicing them, then we can get into the small details and “secrets.”
As promised I am unveiling the new indoor bootcamp schedule.  You can find all the details at www.madisonbootcamps.com.  If you are interested in McFarland you can begin attending now.  Supreme location will begin Nov 3rd.  No need to be a member and shower are provided.

Have a wonderful weekend and I will talk to you Monday!

Female Fat Loss: Week 1 of my diet is over!

I have finished the first 7 days of my diet and I am down about 5.5 lbs.  I have been quite disciplined the last week (with the exception of Saturday), turning down going out to eat with friends, and avoiding Camp Randall Food.  My body is coming along well and am happy with the progress.

On Saturday I let myself have a cheat day.  I am still 6 weeks out of the show so I still have some leeway, but I let my flesh and my desires get the best of me.  I planned on eating one caramel apple and one brat as my cheat foods for the day.  Because I didn’t plan ahead and had no food with me during the day, I caved in a had two of each.

Sunday I worked VERY hard at going low carb from my big carb day.  It took 36 hours to lose the 3.5 lbs (mostly water) that I had gained on Saturday, but I am back to my pre saturday weight.

Lesson for you:  When you have a cheat day or a period of time where you are not making the most responsible food choices, acknowledge what you did and get right back on to eating healthy again.  So often I see or hear people who eat bad for a few days and then continue to and justify it by saying they already ate some bad foods and might as well continue.

This mentality will sabotage you so quickly and will guarantee you poor results.  The same thing goes with exercise… just because you miss a couple days, doesn’t mean you should stop altogher.  Evaluate why you stopped, make some changes and start up again.

From this weekend, I was once again reminded that I need to be prepared ahead of time and not get myself into tough situations.  I packed a few protein bars in my car now, so if I feel like caving in, I can grab one of them.

Talk to you soon!

Dustin

In Tough Economic times DON’T turn to Comfort Food

Today on CNN they had a story about how there has been an increase in sales of comfort foods.  The reason they stated was that people who normally would go shopping to make themselves feel better, are now turning to food because a quart of ice cream is far cheaper than a new purse, watch or shoes.  If people do continue to eat these comfort foods they will experience even more discomfort as their waist lines bulge.

So if you are a mom out there that has started to gravitate towards comfort foods, I challenge you to turn to exercise instead.  Exercise has scientifically been proven to help less sadness, depression, anxiety, amongst other things.  So lace up those shoes, get off the couch and start moving!  I am off to the gym right now!

Later,

Dustin
