About

dsc_4769My name is Dustin Maher  and I am a fitness professional living in Madison, WI.  I am 25 years old and absolutely love my job as a personal trainer/fitness instructor/writer/motivational speaker/and teacher.  I love helping everyone I come in contact with get in better shape. I especially enjoy helping moms to look even better than before having kids.

The first question I get asked a lot is, why a 25 year old single guy loves working with moms.  Well the answer to that question goes back many years to when my mom raised my 3 younger siblings and me, along with my dad.  She was a stay-at-home mom and did so much for her 4 children.  Looking back, I realized that she spent so much time taking care of her kids that she didn’t take time for herself.  I also realized that she didn’t have a good support group of other mothers who were motivated to get in shape and lose the baby fat.  I was very blessed to have a mom that was health conscious and cooked very healthy.  I learned a lot from her as she taught me what it meant to eat well.  I have also realized that when I can help a mom change the foods that she buys for her family and begins to exercise, her kids want to do what she is doing!  So not only do I get to help the mother out, but I get to help out the kids and maybe the husband (once in awhile) out as well.

When I graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Kinesiology Exercise Science,  I immediately knew what I wanted to do!  I created a class called MamaTone Fitness.  The mission for MamaTone was to help moms realize that it was important to take care of there physical bodies, and that they could still achieve a great body after kids.  The second part of the mission was to connect mothers with each other so they could share life’s experiences with one another.

I am proud to say MamaTone is thriving here in Madison and will continue to grow.

But now I have a bigger mission, and that is to help 1,000,000 mothers to get into the best shape of their lives!  My goal is that this website will be a place where mothers can come for the TRUTH when it comes to exercise and eating.  There are so many opinions out there on how to get into great shape that it may seem overwhelming, but I will clear through the clutter and provide meaningful workouts and eating advice that is quick/easy/and effective and that can fit into the daily 3 ring circus better known as life as a mother!

Jane @ 2:28 pm

I heard you speak on Public Radio this morning. I enjoyed the program very much. I’m 65, had 5 children a million years ago, well maybe not that long ago. Just wanted to let you know I enjoyed your program. I live in Argyle, WI, my husband & I just joined a well program in Darlington.

Mom @ 6:37 pm

Hi Jane!
Good for you and your husband, joining some fitness center!
And raising 5 kids! This is Dustin’s Mom and I am right now
next to my 93 yr. old Mom in the nursing home, and she also
raised 5 kids :)….I am showing her pictures of her grandson
and read your letter to her :)! He was just here to see her; we put his muscles to good use on Christmas Day–he and his brother simply pick up their Nana and carry her from the car to the house :). I just joined our beautiful new “Y” this fall, so Dustin got to enjoy a guest pass and work out; he and his g.f. patiently helped my friend and me learn some good core exercises for our age bracket :)…..Abbey told me that next time in Madison I will have to work out with his core class and not just be a spectator like last summer! He likes to tell me about some of his clients that are older than me and how much wt. they can bench, etc., egging me on, you know!
Well, Jane, give Dustin a call next time he is on the radio-he loves hearing from our age group, and as he said this morning, our age gives us no excuse to slack! I have my protein drink with me and am headed for the “Y” when I leave Mom-I find that drinking some before and after I work out does well for me. What works for you?

Hey, he’s cute too!
I’m 75 as of Jan 1, and have been going to River Country Fitness in Black Fiver Falls for 1 /12 years. Owned by Tammy Strandberg. If you don’t know her, you should.
I joined Chicago Heaalth Club in 1973 (now Bally Total fitness), and dropped when men and women were combined. I did not like being watched b the men. So I joined Women’s Workout World after that, and loved it. Another think I hated about Chgo Health Club was the ‘circuit’. WWW didn’t do that. 30 seconds per machine did nfor me and we weren’t allowed to use the machines during the circuit if not on it.

Due to many allergies, I’ve always eaten well, but have been lax off and on for exerciesing. But do it in earnest now, for it is a matter of life and death. My Mom had severe arthritis and sciatica all her adult life, eventually putting her in a nursing home in a wheel chair, unable to take care of herself. I WILL NOT BE LIKE HER!!!!!

I really appreciate all you do. Would love to meet you next time I pass thru Madison. (Where I have 3 neices).

I will continue checking your site and thanks again. My goal is to be in a better shape than I was before having kids. My kids are my joy and love them bunches.

Wes @ 4:49 pm

I noticed on one of your boot camp videos how you supported crutches and seemed to be in a knee brace. I’m guessing ACL and maybe your MCL?
I recently was able to get rid of my brace post-op six weeks on my ACL and was wondering if you had any suggestions for exercises. I can do the elliptical, bike, body weight squats, lunges, and upper body, but need some creative ideas as to switch up my workout and challenge myself while I still can’t jump or run. I also fully agree with your cardio training routine and love how you challenge women to push themselves in weight lifting, as I hate seeing others use those dinky little barbie weights which do absolutely nothing!

admin @ 7:22 pm

Wes,

I actually had a degenerative disease in the knee and required a cartiledge and bone transplant, so I wish it would have been an ACL!

Working out in water is great! I am not sure if you can start climbing stairs, but that is pretty low impact, step-ups are also good. I tried to do a lot of balance work on bosus, and stability disks.

Best of luck as you recover!

Dustin

Wes @ 9:42 am

Way to keep at it after that kind of surgery!
You’re doing a great job getting moms motivated and working hard, and thank you for the suggestions!

Cheers,
Wes
