Exercises To Improve Posture

badpostureOne of the most asked questions I get is workout ideas for those of you who spend most of your day hunched over your desk.  The rounded shoulders, which have become an epidemic the past 30 years since more and more people are sitting at desks and computers.  It is extremely important to take preventative measures to make sure you don’t permanently have poor posture, which down the road can lead to some serious issues.

I have an amazing person named Alicia helping me with the demonstrations.  Alicia is one of our all star Fit Fun Bootcampers and is definitely the life of the party.  She enjoys setting singles up together as potential matches and really does a great job of supporting the bootcampers.  She is also an AMAZING sprinter when you get her outside running.  Watch out!

Be sure to pay attention to how flat she keeps her back on the exercises that require her to be bent over.  This is one of the hardest positions for myself and my trainers to get across to some people.  For those who have had poor posture for many years and have muscle imbalances, it is very tough to keep the back flat instead of rounded.

So today as you sit in the office, grab a coworker, don’t actually grab your coworker though, and go through some of these exercises!

    Terrific Job, Alicia! :-)
I have noticed your great posture at Bootcamp.
I am one of those people that’s at a desk and in front of a computer all day for work. It truly is a challenge to maintain proper posture all day long. After having serious problems with shoulder and arm pain at my previous job, I had to alter many things about how I sat and set up my desk. Making sure I was upright in my chair, feet flat on the floor, and that I was not reaching more then 8-10″ for anything. Ergonomics is very important to. Another thing to consider for women like myself and Alicia is we are, shall I say, “well-endowed” and that is allot of extra weight and pressure on our backs from what we are carrying around up top in the front. That makes maintaining our posture even more of a challenge. Again, great job Alicia and thanks for the great exercise suggestions.

I really enjoyed ayour new tape on standing and sitting straight. I have just purchased this Shake Weight where you do six exercises to build up the arms. Now, because I carry a lot of stuff as an artist, my arms have become larger than they use to be. I’m thinking it’s because I had drunk some protein drinks and I take a lot of vitamins. I’m wondering what you think of my new exercise weight thing. YOu probably don’t like it. How can I reduce the fullness of my strong arms to a more female looking, thin arm that I use to have. I am 5’7′, 140lbs. Can you help me look better? Shalom, Esther

I sit at a desk and type for hours at a time for work so this is great, thanks!

Also, how can I get Alicia to set me up with someone? :)

Excellent example Alicia! I’ve been Queen Slumpie for most of my life. I’ve been trying to think of my posture more during the day and work on it. Even things like heavy winter coats, purses & carrying toddlers can destroy good posture. One yoga pose I try to do each day is the Fish pose, helps open the chest.

    Good info Dustin.
