Jody’s Amazing Fat Loss Transformation on NBC

A couple weeks ago I shared the story about Jody, a mom who had five kids who lost nearly 50 lbs in the past 7 months.  Click here to read her story. NBC heard about the story and featured her in my fitness segment.  This amazing fat loss transformation shows how anybody who works hard and is committed to exercise and eating healthy can achieve amazing results!  I received many emails and calls from people after they watched this on NBC, wanting to know more about what all jody has done.

Here are some of jody’s responses to questions that were asked by people.

Regarding Kate’s questions…When I was taking MamaTone, I was working out at least 2 days per week (3 tops). With Bootcamp, 3 days a week. They are only 6 weeks long, so you HAVE to go the 3 days to really get Continue Reading →

Healthy Hummus Recipe

I am very excited to announce that my mom is going to be a guest contributor to this site.  I am blessed to have an awesome mom!  Growing up she was a great example of how to eat healthy and how to get her kids to eat healthy.  I credit my nutrition knowledge and lifestyle eating choices to her.  Even at 60 years old, she weighs 115 lbs at 5’4 (mom, not sure if I was suppose to say that!).  She weighed 30 more lbs then that in her 20′s, so she has done a great job of losing and now maintaining a healthy weight.  She is now lifting pretty hard which is so important for someone her age.  She even has a goal to do a pullup, which would shock me so much if she was able to do that!

Each week we are going to feature a recipe or ingredient that is healthy.

So here is the first post by my mom!

“Dustin has asked me to do some kind of weekly thing with recipes; what would be neat is if it turned into a recipe exchange, with those of you who can find an extra minute to send off something you and your family are currently enjoying!

Madison Personal Trainer Heads Out to NYC

This was my first visit to NYC… I have traveled nearly everywhere in the US except for the upper northeast.  I had a great two days checking out the city.  I stayed with a college dorm friend of mine who lives in Brooklyn.  She was a great tour guide and we had so much fun.  It really is true that you walk a lot in NYC.

Fit Fun Madison Bootcamps Help Todd Drop 27 lbs in 6 Weeks!

I didn’t think I could see any bigger results than I have seen so far in my Fit Fun Bootcamps, but I was wrong!  It just goes to show what anyone is capable of IF they apply the techniques I teach and go after then 100%.  You might not lose close to 5 lbs a week, but you will greatly improve.  Todd had the right ingredients in him to make this change: he was ready, he was mentally prepared, he had a plan, he was motivated, and he had the right attitude.  Keep in mind, Todd started this around Christmas time when everyone says they can’t lose weight.

So here is Todd’s amazing story in his own words!

As ‘before and after pictures’ tell part of a story, these are BEFORE and WORK IN PROGRESS pictures. And here is more to the story.

Todd at 215

I have been running for the last 6 years on a regular basis.  EXACTLY 3.8 miles 3 to 4 times a week (The same route every day) my legs were getting fatigued and the weight just going up.

In late November I heard Dustin Maher on Wisconsin Public Radio and was impressed with how he was able to answer caller’s questions.  It wasn’t until Friday Dec 12th that I decided I had to get the help of and outside party.  I signed up for FIT FUN BOOTCAMP to start on Monday.  This would be the FIRST time I have ever joined a workout group much less going to a health club.  When I told my family and friends what I was about to do, I just got Blank stares. (I think they all thought I was kidding) Continue Reading →

Weight Loss Transformation: Mom Puts Herself First And Drops 53 lbs!

As I have said many times, I feel bless to have the job I have and be able to do what I do.  The story you are about to read emphasizes this point.  I get great satisfaction that in some way, I have improved the quality of life of a person, helped them live longer, help them see the world differently, and instill an “I Can” belief.  I met Lynn about 8 months ago and have been blessed to see the journey she has gone through in 2008.  Lynn, is a leader and someone who I could count on to rally the troops in bootcamp.  She is always taking the most challenging weights possible and pushing herself to her limits.  She is also very disciplined with her eating.  There is no doubt that she will lose her remaining 45 lbs and I will do a follow up story when that happens!

So here is Lynn’s story in her own words!

lynn-before-pic“Where do I start?  Ever since high school I was on the slow train to weight gain, when suddenly the slow train stopped off at “How on earth did I let myself get this far?”  Each time I went up a pant size I would tell myself, “This is it – I refuse to go up another size.”  Of course, this only worked until I could no longer zip my pants without sucking my gut in and hoping they would stretch quickly so I could breathe again.  I had gained another 35 pounds when I was pregnant with our daughter and was so happy that I had lost it while I was nursing her only to be disappointed to see it all come right back once I stopped.  One day a friend mentioned that she was going to sign up for a program that makes you keep track of what you eat to help you lose weight.  I decided I would join with her because the “tomorrow we are going to start eating better” plan was obviously not working.  In March 2008, I started tracking everything I ate and drank, actually measured my food to ensure I was eating the CORRECT portion size, made sure I ate breakfast everyday and ate fruits and vegetables every day.  Following this plan I had lost 20 pounds – not bad I thought, but I still had so far to go.  This is Continue Reading →

Be Thankful For The Body You DO Have

So often we focus on the number on the scale or the size of clothes in our closet.  To a large extent, my reputation, career, and success is determined by the ability to make those numbers go down.  Sometimes we are so focused on the numbers that we forget to appreciate the bodies that we do have; a body that can do pretty much anything that we ask it to do.  Oprah said it best, “I am fat and disgusted with myself, but I am very thankful that I have a body that has held up throughout the years.  A body that allows me to go places and do things that I want to do.  A heart that keeps on pumping, a body that isn’t constantly in pain.” (That wasn’t quite verbatim, but very close to it).

I was once again reminded of this truth yesterday as I met with a new client who has drastically seen her quality of life decrease in the past year.  Due to years of poor posture and maybe some other circumstances, she has a herniated disc.  I haven’t had one before, so I can’t totally relate, but I have heard it is one of the worst experiences.  Much of the past 8 months has been spent laying on her back on the ground.  Consequently, her small frail body has turned to “Mush.”  (those were her words).  Until recently, picking up a book was too much for her.  The thing that impressed me most about her, was that she never once complained to me, she wasn’t bitter, or mad.  She had a matter-of-fact tone to her and came to me to see what I could do.

I have said it before, but I spent my senior year internship working with physically and mentally disabled people.  If you haven’t been around this group before, I highly encourage you to volunteer somewhere that allows you to interract with them.  They will teach you so much about life, challenges, and your body.  You will leave with a greater appreciation for what you do have, instead of looking at what you don’t have.

I look forward to continuing to give your fitness and nutrition information to make those #’s on the scale decrease and the size of the clothes to go down, but lets keep everything in perspective!

In a couple weeks I will be sharing with you an incredible before and after of a client of mine (a mom) who has battled so many physical challenges that it even amazes me!

Amazing Fat Loss Transformation: Cardio Queen Sees Light of Day!

The story I am about to share with you is an all too common story. It is a client who came to me because she was frustrated that her body was holding on to so much fat, despite the fact that she was doing endless amounts of cardio and trying to eat healthy. After sitting down with her and analyzing her exercise and eating habits, it became clear that she was eating away her muscle with her endless cardio and very low calorie diets. My recommendations to her was to consume much more lean protein and stop all long distance cardio and instead weight train 3X per week for 45 minutes, do 20 minutes of high intensity cardio 2X per week, and eat more lean protein and supplement with protein drinks.

She took my advice and in the past year has completely transformed her body.  One of the things that set her apart, was her work ethic and intensity in the gym.  She wasn’t afraid to work hard, sweat, and even let out some soft grunts.  At one point she told me to make her puke, so I did… TWICE!  When she started to workout she wasn’t able to even do one pushup!  How things can change in only a year!

Here is her story in her own words!

Abby Before

Abby Before

“Everyone has heard of the “Freshman 15;” well, I apparently decided to take it a step further and experienced something closer to the “Freshmen 20!” But I didn’t stop there, over the next few years, I continued to gain more weight.  Even after college, the weight continued to pile on, reaching an all-time high for me of 149lbs. During this time, I was quite the “Cardio Queen.”  I would spend from 1.5 to 2 hours/day, 3-4 days/week doing any variety of cardio (treadmill, bike, elliptical, stair climber).  This wasn’t exactly high-intensity cardio, either (obviously, I would not be able to keep that up for 1.5-2 hours!).  Despite my numerous hours at the gym, engaged in my Cardio Queen activities, I couldn’t lose any weight…and more specifically, couldn’t lose any fat!

After years of frustration and low self-esteem, I signed up for Dustin’s Core Class.  I always thought I had a strong core, after all I could do countless crunches!  Boy, was I wrong!  Dustin’s class taught me how weak I really was…core and all.  After a month of Core Class, I noticed my body was getting stronger, but I wanted to kick it up a notch.  I signed up for small group personal training.  Before my first session with Dustin, he took my body fat, which surprised me at 25%.  I was shocked at how high it was, and I couldn’t help but wonder what it was before I started Core Class!  Continue Reading →

Who Are You?

I have recently been studying more about the mental side of weight loss and fitness.  I have always wondered how people who were in poor shape and then get in great shape, can go back to poor shape again, even though they never planned on doing so.  Last week Oprah made a big deal about her falling off the wagon, and then on Monday she had Eric, season 3 winner of the Biggest Loser.  Eric had lost 214 lbs and looked amazing, but three years later he came on Oprah and he had gained about 130 lbs and looked horrible.  This is just one of many examples I have personally witnessed and seen, where someone falls back into their old lifestyles and poor habits.

Even though most people know eating right and exercising WILL make them feel better, be healthier, and have more energy; why is it that we are self-sabotaging ourselves?

Here is one of my theories to why this happens.  I believe that it is based on how we view our self and who we believe we are.  For example, do you believe you are a fit, healthy, active person who just hasn’t been as consistent of late with your workouts and healthy eating?  Or do you believe you are a fat, lazy, unmotivated person who can’t seem to keep any sort of proper exercise and nutrition plan going?

Can you see the difference in the two different beliefs?  Both people aren’t in great shape, but one views themself as a fit person who just needs to get refocused, but the second person has a very self-defeating attitude.  If you believe you are deserving of a fit, healthy body, you will be more likely to live a lifestyle that promotes that type of behavior.

I will never be in poor shape, because it isn’t part of who I am.  I don’t see myself that way, and unless I do, I won’t let myself become lazy and fat.  We all go through times when life gets challenging and we don’t take care of ourselves like we should (this happens to me from time to time), but it doesn’t take long for me to realize that I don’t view myself as a lazy and fat person and therefore snap out of it quickly and don’t let it spiral out of control.

So if you do have a self-defeating negative attitude towards yourself what can you do?

One thing I recommend is positive affirmations.  Positive affirmations can, over time, change the way you view yourself.  These are best said multiple times per day, in order for them to stick in your mind until they get to your heart.  Here is an example, feel free to make up your own. Please Share With Me Your Health Goals!

I am going to keep this short and to the point. Goals, or new years resolutions have been around for a long time and most never get accomplished, but I believe with the support of MamaTone blog, and the implementation of these blog posts, this will be the year that you succeed and reach your goals.

I make many goals each year, one of my goals I wrote out last year was to be on TV by my birthday (June 13th), I exceeded that goal; this past year I have been blessed to have been on a few different networks and appeared over 18 times on TV as well as having appeared in many newspapers and magazines. I also feel blessed to have a monthly radio show that I get to do!  The media has helped me so much this year be able to share my passion for helping others become the best they can be physically and mentally.  I believe part of the reason I saw these goals met this past year was because I wrote them down and BELIEVED they would happen, even though at the time I had no idea how I would get in the media.

So this year I am asking you to write to everyone what your 5 or more health related goals are. You can share many more if you would like. Share your 2009 goals, but more specifically your goals for the next 3 months. 3 months from now, on March 7th, I will send another email out asking you how you have been doing and expect those who post their goals now, to respond 3 months later.

Is this scary, maybe a little… but putting yourself out there a little bit will encourage growth and action.

I am going to share with you one of my goals. To be honest this is scary for me to write, because I will be trying to do something I have tried before and failed to do.

My goal is in 3 months to bench press at least 250 lbs for one rep.

So hear is the deal, I am putting myself out on the line and will video tape my attempt during the first week of March in the Caribbean on my fitness cruise that I am hosting www.fitfuncruise.com I have tried a few times before to work up to this weight and have fallen at least 20 lbs short. You can be sure, I will be doing my best the next 3 months to not let myself down!

Your turn! Click the comment box below and share your goals for 2009 and for the next 3 months.  I look forward to hearing from you!
