Acai Berry Weight Loss Scams: Beware!

If you haven’t heard about the new weight loss miracle supplement Acai Berry you must be living under a rock.  Acai Berry has been featured on shows such as Oprah, CNN, ABC, and so on.  With all the rage of late their must be an amazing amount of research to support their weight loss claims…. Right?  Wrong!  There is very little if not any data to support the claims made about Acai Berry and certainly no research to support the 30-50 lb weight loss stories that keep coming up.

Here are just a sample of some of the websites to be aware of:

What is Acai Berry?

Acai Berry is a small dark purple berry that looks like a grape.  It is found native in the Amazon near Brazil.  It has a berry/chocolate taste.  The berry contains high amounts of healthy fats and antioxidants.

It is the high levels of antioxidants, 15-30 times more than red wine, that has everyone excited.Antioxidants are very important and have been shown to have many health benefits such as reduction in cancer, cholesterol, and blood pressure.

It is so hard to find good information about the Acai Berry online because all the websites are trying to sell it!  Talk about bias info!

The bottom line is that Acai Berries seem to be very healthy and contain large amounts of antioxidants and good fats.  But the notion that they are this weight loss miracle is completely false.  At best they might have slight metabolism boosting benefits similar to green tea and hot sauce.  So buyer beware, feel free to try it out, its good for you, just don’t expect 30 lbs to fly off you in 30 days like many claims are promising!

Keep moving!

YESSSSSSSSS!!!! I’ve been waiting for you to speak on this topic! The advertisements for Acai Berry on Myspace are out of control; I’m sooo sick of seeing them. It was good to read this blog.

    Thanks!

    Hi all,

I compltely agree. Acai is a great berry, having lived in Brazil, it is a stable drink for many there… It is very healthy and a great supplement.

Here is the thing, as with most fruit and berry drinks here in the US, most of the Acai drinks I have seen have TONS of sugar added.

In its raw form Acai is not very sweet, it is bitter and kind of harsh.

I agree beware of scams, read labels, and trust your gut.
    :)

Good job, Dustin…..I’ve recently been wondering about
the stuff, but you took it further and did a bit of research on it… isn’t that the truth, about trying to learn about something without someone trying to sell it?! Oh well, thank God for a free country-I won’t complain :) ! It would be fun to hear from someone who
has used the stuff…..sounds like Sean has had it in Brazil; I wonder if they sweeten it or add other juices, or take it straight and bitter? Can you buy the plain stuff here, and is it expensive? Do we even have a berry like that in our country, high in antiox. and a high fat content–sounds strange!
Are you all shovelled out over there in snow country??!

    Well Done!
I actually sell an Acai supplement and ONLY recommend it as a high antioxidant supplement.
The number of people emailing me asking why I don’t mention the weight loss side – I have to email back saying that Acai on it’s own is NOT a weight loss pill. A good healthy diet and exercise are.
Anyway – Thanks and well done.
    Simon

    Simon,

I thank you for your honesty and promoting as an antioxidant only! It is a great fruit that can help people!

Wow good article! There’s a lot of talk these days in the health industry about some amazing fruits called Acai Berries which are said to have amazing natural weight loss qualities. Do they really work as well as people claim they do? I think they do and your post proves it.

    Good job!
